Basic Image Editing with AI: Crop, Compress, and Preserve Detail
A website image does not need every camera pixel, but it must preserve what viewers need to see. Aim for a file suited to its destination, not the smallest possible file at any cost.
AI can help define edits or perform them when the application has suitable tools. A message saying “optimized” is not proof of an exported file.
🗂️ 1. Preserve the original and define the output
Work on a copy. Specify aspect ratio, pixel dimensions, maximum file size, format, and essential details. Pixel dimensions and file size are different properties.
An example brief is a 1200 × 1200 product image with a readable label and unchanged packaging color. Use the actual destination requirements when they differ.
✂️ 2. Crop before resizing
Identify what must remain: faces, hands, logos, labels, or accessories. If the original lacks space, choose another composition rather than stretching the subject.
Suggest a crop for [target aspect ratio]. Preserve [essential details] and leave space at [position]. Do not distort the subject or invent product features. If the target frame is unsuitable, explain what would be lost.
Cropping removes image area. Generating additional background is a separate operation that needs its own review.
🎨 3. Adjust light and color carefully
Start with modest exposure, color-balance, and contrast changes. Compare product colors before and after. An attractive filter that misrepresents the item does not meet the brief.
🔍 Preserve real details
After generative edits, inspect labels, small text, seams, edges, and component counts. For resizing or compression alone, use direct image processing to preserve the original content.
📦 4. Compress and obtain an actual file
Squoosh supports multiple compression formats; its project documentation says image compression runs locally in the browser. Other services have their own processing arrangements.
Try a format supported by the destination, reduce quality gradually, and compare. There is no universal file-size reduction percentage. Text, gradients, and hair detail expose different compression artifacts.
Check the exported file against this brief: [brief]. Report actual dimensions, format, and file size if your tools can read them. Compare small text, subject edges, product colors, and gradients. State what you could not verify instead of claiming unchanged quality.
👀 5. Inspect at two sizes
Review at 100% for defects and at the real display size for composition. Check on a phone when that is the primary viewing context. A thumbnail can hide blurry labels or rough edges.
CYAN CAM, currently in beta, can help record an editing workflow for teammates.
✅ 6. Save clear versions
Use names such as product-front-web-v2.jpg and keep originals separate from published files. Record export settings as a starting point, while still checking each image.
Good editing preserves the subject, the information, and the output requirements. Let AI help with the brief and review, then use the actual file to establish completion.
